LP Level 4 Examples of Longer type questions (Sept Exam 2011)

QUESTIon
 7.1.  Give short description of what social learning theory is  about.             (2)
7.2.    Provide a practical example of how you could apply social learning theory in the class room .                                                                                                  (3)
7.3.    Read through these examples of conditioning and provide the correct information.                                                                                             (16)
NB
ü  For each example decide whether it is classical conditioning OR operant conditioning or
ü  If it is classical conditioning, identify the unconditioned stimulus (US), the unconditioned response (UR)the conditioned stimulus (CS) and the conditioned response (CR).
ü  If it is operant conditioning, provide an explanation for the behavior.

I.              Example One:
John Watson conducted an experiment with a boy named Albert in which he paired a white rat with a loud, startling noise. Albert now becomes startled at the sight of the white rat.
  

II.            Example Two:
Your car has a red, flashing light that blinks annoyingly if you start the car without buckling the seat belt. You become less likely to start the car without buckling the seat belt.

III.           Example Three:
To stop bad habits, it is sometimes recommended that you put a rubber band around your wrist and snap it every time you notice yourself doing that behaviour.

IV.          Example Four:
Your father gives you a credit card at the end of your first year in college because you did so well. As a result, your grades continue to get better in your second year.

7.4.        Draw a table to explain the difference between the cognitive learning theory and constructivist learning theory. Please ensure you mention at least 2 differences.        (4)
QUESTION 8:
8.1. Read the following case study and answer the questions below.
Miss Petersen wants to teach five-year-old children to sort shapes of different colours into different sets. She wants all the blue triangles, red squares and yellow circles in separate groups. The children really struggle with this task as they seem to be unable to sort the shapes into the categories that Miss Petersen wants.
 8.1.1.   By applying Piaget’s cognitive development theory can you explain to Miss Petersen why the children are struggling with the task?                (5) 
8.1.2.   Name Piaget’s four stages of development.                                  (4)
 8.2.      Draw a labeled diagram of the Zone of Proximal development (ZPD).
            Use the diagram to explain how the zone of proximal development works.                                                                                                                           (5) 
8.4.    Draw up a table to compare maturation theory and socio-cultural/ ecological theory. Give 3 comparisons.                                                                     (6)

10.4.    Behaviour modification is based on 2 stages. Name and describe them.    (4)
10.5.    Explain what is meant by the term empowerment.
